Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth is a role-playing video game developed by Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio and published by Sega. The game is the ninth mainline entry of the Like a Dragon series, and a direct sequel to Yakuza (2020) and the spin-off title Like a Dragon Gaiden: The Man Who Erased His Name (2023).

Infinite Wealth stars Ichiban Kasuga, protagonist of Yakuza: Like a Dragon, and Kazuma Kiryu, the original protagonist of the series, and takes place in the franchise's first-ever overseas locale, Hawaii, in addition to familiar settings in Japan . Together with old and new allies, Kasuga and Kiryu team up to help the former find and reunite with his mother in Hawaii, while the latter struggles to survive with lung cancer.

Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth was released for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Windows, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S on January 26, 2024. Upon release, the game received positive reviews from critics.

Gameplay

In Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth, players control Ichiban Kasuga and Kazuma Kiryu, and their respective party members, as they explore the Isezaki Ijincho district of Yokohama, and Honolulu City in Hawaii. The Kamurochō district, a primary location from previous Like a Dragon titles, is also featured as a third location. Similar to Yakuza: Like a Dragon, the game employs a turn-based combat system for all playable characters. Each character can choose from a multitude of "jobs", which act as classes that grant them distinctive perks and playstyles. Kiryu's unique job, "Dragon of Dojima", provides him with the ability to switch between multiple fighting styles, while also allowing him to temporarily perform real-time combat, similar to the brawler gameplay from previous Like a Dragon titles. The Poundmates summon system returns, featuring a variety of new and returning franchise characters, such as Shun Akiyama and Kaoru Sayama.

Several minigames from previous entries return, such as Karaoke, Darts, Mahjong, and arcade games, including Virtua Fighter 3tb, Sega Bass Fishing, and SpikeOut.

In addition, new minigames are introduced in Infinite Wealth, such as Crazy Delivery, a food delivery game inspired by Sega's Crazy Taxi franchise; Sujimon Battle, a Pokémon parody game; and Miss Match, a dating app for Kasuga. A major side activity, Happy Resort Dondoko Island, tasks Kasuga with managing his own resort island, combining objectives such as resource gathering, crafting, and social interactions. Kiryu also has his own side activity, Bucket List, which focuses on Kiryu reuniting with his old friends and allies from previous Like a Dragon titles.

Synopsis

Premise

Honolulu, HI, a major setting in Infinite Wealth and the franchise's first-ever overseas setting

Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth takes place in 2023, and follows former Tojo Clan yakuza members Ichiban Kasuga (Kazuhiro Nakaya/Kaiji Tang) and Kazuma Kiryu (Takaya Kuroda/Yong Yea) as they embark on a new adventure in Isezaki Ijincho, Yokohama and Honolulu, Hawaii. Following a tip from a former ally, Kasuga travels to Honolulu in search of his biological mother, Akane Kishida (Yoshiko Sakakibara/Patti Yasutake), who he thought had died many years ago. Meanwhile, Kiryu is also present in Honolulu in search of Akane per the Daidoji faction's orders, and teams up with Kasuga to find and protect her from various local criminal organizations while wrestling against cancer.

Kasuga's party members from Yakuza return, including: Yu Nanba (Ken Yasuda/Greg Chun), Koichi Adachi (Akio Otsuka/Andrew Morgado), Saeko Mukoda (Sumire Uesaka/Elizabeth Maxwell), Tianyou Zhao (Nobuhiko Okamoto/Robbie Daymond), and Joongi Han (Yuichi Nakamura/Keong Sim). Joining the playable roster are Seonhee (Hana Takeda/Fiona Rene), leader of the Ijincho-based Geomijul syndicate and Yokohama Liumang gang, and a supporting character from the previous title; Eric Tomizawa (Satoru Iguchi/Matthew Yang King), a local taxi driver in Hawaii; and Chitose Fujinomiya (Anju Inami/Suzie Yeung), Akane's personal maid. Other major characters include: Jo Sawashiro (Shinichi Tsutsumi/Ian Anthony Dale), the former captain of the Tojo Clan's Arakawa Family and one of Kasuga's adversaries from the previous game; Eiji Mitamura (Ryo Narita/Aleks Le), a wheelchair-bound engineer who Kasuga meets and befriends at Honolulu; Masataka Ebina (Hiroki Hasegawa/Daniel Dae Kim), captain and acting chairman of the Ijincho-based Seiryu Clan; Yutaka Yamai (Takehito Koyasu/Andrew Kishino), patriarch of the Hawaiian Yamai Syndicate; Dwight Méndez (Shuhei Matsuda/Danny Trejo), leader of the Hawaiian Barracudas gang; Wong Tou (Takuya Matsumoto/Rich Ting), commander of the Chinese Ganzhe Mafia; Kihei Hanawa (Hiroki Tōchi/Jake Eberle), Kiryu's handler in the Daidoji faction; Bryce Fairchild (Tōru Furuya/Chris Parson), the head of Palekana, a Hawaiian religious group; and Lani Mililani (Atsumi Tanezaki/Justine Lee), a young Hawaiian girl who is also targeted by the various gangs. Kasuga's biological father, Masumi Arakawa (Kiichi Nakai/Johnny Yong Bosch), and adoptive brother Masato (Kohsuke Toriumi/Will Yun Lee), appear in flashbacks.

Infinite Wealth features a multitude of returning characters from previous Like a Dragon games, the majority of whom appear as part of Kiryu's "Bucket List" side story. These include: Goro Majima (Hidenari Ugaki/Matthew Mercer), Taiga Saejima (Rikiya Koyama/Ron Yuan), and Daigo Dojima (Satoshi Tokushige/Tim Friedlander), former Tojo Clan officers and Kiryu's long-time allies; Osamu Kashiwagi (Shunsuke Sakuya/David Hayter), the proprietor of Survive Bar and a former Tojo Clan senior officer; Makoto Date (Kazuhiro Yamaji/Bill Farmer), a Kamurocho police detective; Shun Akiyama (Koichi Yamadera/Stephen Fu), a Kamurocho loan shark; Kaoru Sayama (Aya Hisakawa/Minae Noji), an Osakan police detective and Kiryu's former love interest; Kazuki (Hiroshi Tsuchida/Christopher Sean) and Yuya (Kenta Miyake/Patrick Seitz), respectively owner and manager of Kamurocho's Stardust host club and two of Kiryu's friends; Yuki (Manami Sugihara/Erica Lindbeck) and Koyuki (Mayu Motoori/Erika Harlacher), a legendary hostess duo who Kiryu stumbles upon his journey in Sotenbori, Osaka; Naoto Tagashira (Yoshimasa Hosoya/Brent Mukai) and Takaaki Matsunaga (Doronzu Ishimoto/James C. Burns), members of the Hirose Family from Onomichi, Hiroshima; Yotaro Nakajima (Naomi Kusumi/William Salyers), head of a taxi firm in Nagasugai, Fukuoka; and Haruka Sawamura (Rie Kugimiya/Xanthe Huynh) and Taichi (Shunzo Miyasaka/Caleb Yen), Kiryu's adopted children.

Plot

In 2022, three years after the joint dissolution of the Tojo Clan and Omi Alliance, ex-yakuza Ichiban Kasuga is now an employee at Hello Work employment agency, determined to carry on his father Masumi Arakawa's legacy by helping fellow ex-yakuza find legitimate work. After a hangout with his friends Yu Nanba, Koichi Adachi, and Saeko Mukoda, Ichiban attempts to ask Saeko out on a date and later proposes to her during the date. However, Saeko gently rejects Kasuga and proceeds to ignore him for a year. In 2023, VTuber Hisoka Tatara spreads false rumors of Kasuga building his own crime ring from ex-yakuza members, which gets Kasuga and Nanba fired from their jobs, and Adachi unable to take loans from the bank. A month later, the three would learn that the Seiryu Clan has been recruiting ex-yakuza en masse. The three infiltrate the Seiryu Clan HQ and eventually meet up with their Acting Chairman, Masataka Ebina, who reveals that he is hiring ex-yakuza into a legitimate waste management business in a secure holding facility on the docks and that he is organizing a "Second Great Dissolution" to disband the remaining yakuza clans. Ebina informs them that he is working with Jo Sawashiro, who has been released from prison thanks to Ebina presenting evidence that proved his innocence in the murder of the previous Seiryu Clan Chairman Ryuhei Hoshino. Sawashiro reveals to Kasuga that his biological mother, Akane Kishida, was alive all along, has been living in Honolulu, Hawaii since, and asks Kasuga to meet her.

Kasuga leaves for Hawaii in hopes of meeting Akane. Arriving at the island, Kasuga quickly befriends the wheelchair-bound engineer Eiji Mitamura. On route to Akane's residence, he is caught in an attempted robbery by taxi driver Eric Tomizawa, which is thwarted by Eiji, but later is robbed of his passport and stripped naked by Akane's maid Chitose Fujinomiya. Escaping the police station after being arrested for public indecency, Kasuga reunites with Kazuma Kiryu, who is on a mission from the Daidoji Faction to find Akane. While investigating Akane's house, Kasuga and Kiryu are confronted by Yutaka Yamai of the Yamai Syndicate, who are also searching for Akane. Eric, coerced into working for Yamai after a wrongful conviction set up by the local Barracudas gang, is convinced by Kasuga to defect and join them. Kasuga and the party discover that Chitose used Kasuga's passport to enter District Five, an air raid shelter turned into a homeless camp, counterfeit goods shopping and bidding center, and the base of the Barracudas. Kasuga also learns that Kiryu has contracted cancer, following an accident at a nuclear waste disposal plant in 2020, and he has only six months left to live.

The party infiltrates District Five and finds Chitose, being hunted down by the Barracudas. She reveals that she drugged Kasuga to avoid arousing suspicion of trespassing and having a part-time job with Akane, and stole Kasuga's passport to avoid the authorities and her controlling family, being a major player in Japan's economy. She also reveals that the Barracudas are also looking for Akane. Seeking answers, Chitose joins the party and together they confront the Barracudas leader Dwight Méndez. Gaining intel from Chitose on Akane's occupation as an orphanage director, The party discovers that Akane was part of a religious charity group called Palekana and that the two of Hawaii's largest gangs: the Barracudas, and the Chinese Ganzhe Mafia, along with the smaller-sized Yamai Syndicate are all after Akane.

Working together with a small team of Daidoji members led by Kiryu's handler Kihei Hanawa, Kasuga and his party infiltrate Nirvana Hotel to find Wong Tou, the proprietor of the hotel and Commander of the Ganzhe. After beating Wong in combat, he reveals that the Barracudas and the Ganzhe are secretly controlled by the Overseer, the true ruler of Hawaii's underworld. Having leaked information, Wong is later betrayed by his own grunts, being spies for the Overseer, forcing Kasuga's party to assist him in saving his son. Wong reveals that the Overseer is Bryce Fairchild, the Sage of Palekana, and that he's hunting down Akane because she knows the whereabouts of his real target, a young child named Lani. Kiryu stays behind to let Kasuga's team and Wong escape from Yamai, who takes the opportunity to usurp the Ganzhe Mafia's territory and gets captured. Nanba and Adachi, having arrived in Hawaii, join Kasuga's party to raid Yamai's lair in Night Square Theater. After a fight, they find Kiryu being treated by Yamai, who looks up to him back during his days as a Tojo Clan officer. Yamai reveals that he wants Akane as a bargaining chip for a deal with Palekana to grow his syndicate. Upon being told by Kasuga why Akane was hunted down, he decides to call off their side of the search. Unfortunately, Kiryu's condition worsened, and he is forced to return to Japan for treatment with Nanba accompanying him. Kasuga and his party raid the Palekana orphanage to seek answers from Bryce, but he escapes.

Back in Yokohama, Japan, Nanba and Saeko, joined by Geomijul and Yokohama Liumang leader Seonhee, do their best to convince Kiryu to take treatment more seriously. However, it was cut short as Seonhee was informed that the Seiryu Clan are planning to expand its waste management operations to Hawaii. Kiryu decides to meet with Ebina and Sawashiro at the Tojo Clan Headquarters, now taken over by the Seiryu Clan. Ebina reveals he got the idea for his waste management business from Palekana, who runs a similar business on Nele Island, and he plans on partnering with them. However, they claim they have no knowledge of Palekana hunting Akane. Later, Kiryu and his party are taken by surprise when Hisoka Tatara publicly exposes Kiryu's survival to the world and claims he plans to resurrect the Tojo Clan, which is seemingly corroborated by Ebina and Sawashiro.

Around the same time in Hawaii, Kasuga manages to convince Yamai to help him and his party find and secure Akane and Lani, hiding in a yacht offshore this whole time. As they're en route to a Daidoji safehouse, Akane reveals that Lani is the last surviving member of the Mililani family, the true successor to the position of Sage of Palekana, and that Bryce usurped the position by murdering the previous Sage. Upon reaching the Daidoji safehouse, Chitose warns the party that they're compromised and that Eiji is actually a Seiryu Clan spy, faking his disability to gain Kasuga's trust, but is too late as the Barracudas raid the safehouse, resulting in Wong and Hanawa dead, Eiji escaping, and Lani being captured. Chitose then confesses that she is the true identity behind Hisoka Tatara, and that Eiji blackmailed her to defame Kasuga and Kiryu, serving as their accomplice. Kasuga and Kiryu share what they learned, with Kasuga going after Lani while Kiryu goes to reveal the truth of Ebina's plans to Sawashiro.

Former Yokohama Liumang Leader Tianyou Zhao joins forces with Kiryu's party as they confront Sawashiro, who reveals that he has been secretly working behind Ebina's back to actually carry out the Second Great Dissolution in Arakawa's memory. He realizes that Ebina's plan is a ruse after sending Kasuga to Hawaii, and that Ebina used Kasuga to bait out Akane as a favor for Bryce. Ebina plans to make a deal with Bryce to store all of Japan's accumulated nuclear waste on Nele Island, allowing the government to resume Japan's nuclear industry, and amassing wealth for both of them. Sawashiro and Kiryu however, shared the belief that there's an ulterior motive behind Ebina's plans. Meanwhile, in Hawaii, Chitose, feeling guilt for betraying Kasuga and his party, went off on her own to find Eiji and Lani. The remaining Daidoji members briefed Kasuga and his party about Ebina's Palekana deal and plan to stop it, using Akane and Lani as leverage in a proxy war against Palekana. The Daidoji also informed Kasuga of Eiji's past: A former political reporter who believes that he was wrongfully convicted of a hit-and-run by the Arakawa Family, and a former member of Bleach Japan. Being tipped off by Chitose on Eiji's location at Club Guilty, Kasuga and his party confronts Eiji, but he escapes with Lani. Chitose then reveals the full extent of Eiji's manipulation: He reached out to Chitose to help her expose a cover-up of a cargo ship accident by her father, using her Hisoka Tatara channel, allowing her to be sent to Hawaii away from her family. The two would manage the channel together doing exposes until Eiji started his plans to defame reformed ex-yakuza members, and eventually, Kasuga. When Chitose attempts to quit, Eiji threatens to reveal her identity as Tatara, and when Kasuga arrives in Hawaii, Eiji orders Chitose to pose as Akane's housemaid to get acquainted with Kasuga and serve as a spy. Yamai later informs Kasuga that some of his men had betrayed him for Palekana, and that Eiji organized a joint attack on Yamai's hideout, forcing him and his party to rush to save Akane.

Sawashiro requests Kiryu to see out former Tojo Clan members Daigo Dojima, Taiga Saejima, and Goro Majima to help with the Second Dissolution. They revealed that Tatara made accusations of their ex-Yakuza employees, causing the company to go under, and forcing them to disappear and live on the coast. Daigo reveals that Ebina approached them for his Second Dissolution plan, but discovers that he is actually Arakawa's illegitimate son, making him Kasuga's half-brother. Arakawa, having massacred the Hikawa Family for hunting down Akane on the day of Kasuga's birth, inadvertently abandons Ebina's mother, the daughter of the Hikawa Family patriarch, whom Arakawa initially agreed to marry. Believing that the Dissolution would fail again, they declined the proposal to help Sawashiro. Later, Tatara, replaced by a substitute by Eiji, leaks the footage of the meeting, causing public outcry and a manhunt for Kiryu. Later that night, Tatara held a live stream seemingly with Ebina and Sawashiro at the Tojo Clan Headquarters, where Ebina reveals his deal with Palekana, and announces the dissolution of the Seiryu Clan, the reformation of Bleach Japan, and plans to pass their Yakuza Rehabilitation Program to the government. Kiryu and his party raid the Tojo HQ but find no signs of Ebina or Sawashiro. Kiryu and his party leave as the public mob live-streamed the aftermath of the attack.

Joon-gi Han, Seonhee's right-hand man, arrives in Hawaii to help Kasuga find a way to Nele Island. Kasuga and his party investigate a secret passage within District Five, which leads to a hidden port heading to Nele Island. The team arrives just in time and defeats Dwight and his crew before Lani is sent to the island. Fearing Eiji has sabotaged the Daidoji transport to Japan, Kasuga confides to Yamai, who then reveals that he possesses a boat allowing them to get back to mainland Japan. Dwight and The Barracudas chased down the boat upon shark-infested waters, forcing Kasuga and his party to fend off the grunts and Dwight for the last time. Dwight, having failed Bryce, attempts to escape via speedboat, but is eaten by a shark. Upon arriving in Japan, they were greeted by Kiryu's old partner Makoto Date, who revealed that in exchange for a passage back to Japan, Yamai would confess to the murder of Shuji Tabata, Yamai's patriarch during his Tojo Clan days that caused him to flee to Hawaii. Yamai flees from the police, only to be found by Kasuga in the hospital room of Yui Tabata, Yamai's matriarch and his old flame, slowly dying of Alzheimer's. Yamai bids her farewell and turns himself in.

With Akane and Lani now safe in Japan, Kasuga and Kiryu's teams reconvene in Yokohama. Word then got out of the Tojo Clan Headquarters on fire, being set by Ebina after killing his subordinate, as well as the first shipments of nuclear waste and yakuzas gathered via the Yakuza Rehabilitation Program heading to Nele Island. Ebina then contacts the party, saying that their program has been approved by the government, then reveals that he has Sawashiro hostage, and taunts them to meet at the Millenium Tower. With the help of the Daidoji, the party splits up: Kasuga and his party of Eric, Adachi, Chitose, and Joon-gi return to Hawaii to stop Bryce, while Kiryu's party of Namba, Saeko, Seonhee, and Zhao make their way to Millenium Tower to save Sawashiro. In Hawaii, Kasuga's party assaults Nele Island, and heads towards Bryce's castle, saving Wong Tou's son along the way. Delving deep down under the castle, Kasuga and his party discover a natural cave filled with radioactive barrels, revealing Palekana's waste disposal facility a lie. Kasuga confronts Bryce, who reveals that he came from a Mafia and that he plans to use the island to keep the world's deepest darkest secrets, allowing Bryce to have global influence. Kasuga defeats him, and Chitose, as Tatara, ruins Bryce and Palekana's reputation by exposing the unsafe storage conditions of the nuclear waste stored under the island, corroborated by her father as one of the major contributors to Ebina's plan, whom Chitose had talked to before the split-up. Chitose then reveals herself as Tatara and admits guilt of spreading false information over the years. Bryce attempts to commit suicide after admitting defeat, but Kasuga saves him.

Shortly after Chitose's confession, Kiryu's party assaults the Millenium Tower to rescue Sawashiro, with help from Daigo, Saejima, and Majima. Kiryu and his team confront Ebina and finds Sawashiro barely alive and losing an eye. Ebina, who knows Sawashiro is working against him, reveals that Eiji is the one who figured out that Sawashiro didn't kill Hoshino and the one who gave him the idea of working with Palekana and Nele Island. Having a grudge towards the yakuza, Arakawa, and Ichiban by proxy, Ebina reveals his actual plan behind the Palekana deal: Using the Yakuza Rehabilitation Program, he intends to send the yakuzas to work on Nele Island's nuclear waste disposal, causing them to slowly die of radiation poisoning and torturing them for the rest of their lives, with no way out of the island. After a lengthy fight, Kiryu admits that Ebina's anger against the yakuza is justified, apologizes to Ebina on behalf of Arakawa and the entire yakuza, and begs him for a chance to atone. Kiryu then falls unconscious and is evacuated to a hospital. Meanwhile, Kasuga convinces Eiji, no longer able to use his legs from abusing the medicine used to fake his disability, to turn himself in, promising him to be the first to greet him once released. As he escorts Eiji, he is harassed and beaten up by the angry mob along the way. After successfully escorting Eiji to the police station and bids farewell to him, Kasuga gets hit by a bottle and passes out at the entrance.

Sometime later, the public has largely forgotten Bryce, Ebina, and Eiji's crimes and moves on to the next controversy. Tomizawa decides to devote more time to helping the homeless in Hawaii, while Chitose becomes the chairwoman of her family business. Lani chooses to embrace her role as Sage to rebuild Palekana with Akane's assistance. Kasuga attempts to confess his feelings for Saeko once more but messes up again after revealing that he wears a T-shirt declaring his love for her. Meanwhile, Kiryu's adopted daughter Haruka Sawamura, and his grandson Haruto visit him at the hospital just as he is about to receive treatment for his cancer. When asked about his name, Kiryu, no longer needing to fake his death, uses his actual name.

Development and promotion

Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth was announced in September 2022 during Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio's Summit livestream, initially named Like a Dragon 8. The first announcement trailer featured voiceover from various characters in the game, followed by the on-screen appearance of both Ichiban Kasuga and Kazuma Kiryu. Kiryu's design was a notable highlight due to the major contrast with his past appearances.

In early 2023, RGG Studio hosted a Cabaret Club Grand Prix competition, in which five models were chosen to appear as live-action hostesses for the cabaret club minigame in Like a Dragon Gaiden: The Man Who Erased His Name, while the Grand Prix winner is chosen to appear as an in-game character in Infinite Wealth. Among the five finalists, livestreamer and VTuber Kson ultimately won the Grand Prix. Her character, Kei, appears in a supporting capacity as a worker at Revolve Bar, which also serves as a hangout spot for the player characters.

In addition to Kson, Infinite Wealth features several Japanese celebrities making in-game appearances, including MMA fighter and YouTuber Mikuru Asakura, TV announcer Risa Unai, Utamaru of the hip-hop group Rhymester, weather reporters Saya Hiyama and Yui Komaki, and the TV characters Gachapin and Mukku.

A second trailer premiered at Xbox Games Showcase 2023, teasing a new setting outside of Japan, while also confirming the new title. RGG Studio Head Masayoshi Yokoyama explained the Infinite Wealth subtitle as a direct tie to the themes in the story, and also as a differentiation between the international version of the game and the Japanese version, the latter of which is simply titled Ryū ga Gotoku 8.

In September 2023, RGG Studio hosted a second Summit livestream, detailing the story and characters, as well as gameplay features of Infinite Wealth via two new trailers. The studio also revealed Japanese cast members of the game, and announced actors Danny Trejo and Daniel Dae Kim as part of the English voice cast. In addition to the English dub, for the first time in the series, a Chinese dub is also available for Infinite Wealth, with karaoke songs sung in Chinese by the Chinese voice cast, with lyrics shown in Chinese pinyin (on all languages, besides Simplified Chinese and Traditional Chinese, which now displays Traditional Chinese lyrics if the voices are set to Japanese; Simplified Chinese lyrics will be displayed when playing with Simplified Chinese or Traditional Chinese text if the voices are set to Chinese).

In October 2023, RGG Studios unveiled Happy Resort Dondoko Island, a side activity featured in Infinite Wealth, as part of Xbox's Partner Preview livestream. In December 2023, the studio released a trailer for the Bucket List story, noting it as a major side activity for Kiryu in Infinite Wealth.

Release

Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth was released for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Windows, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S on January 26, 2024. A special trial version for the game is included with the spin-off title Like a Dragon Gaiden: The Man Who Erased His Name, released on November 9, 2023, available after beating the game's main story for the first time.

Reception

Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth received "generally favorable reviews" from critics for the PC and PS5 versions, while the Xbox Series X/S version received "universal acclaim", according to review aggregator website Metacritic.
