Al-lohūf ʿalā qatla’l-ṭofūf (Arabic: أللُّهوف عَلى قتلَىِ الطّفوف) also known as Lohūf (Arabic: لُهوف) is one of the widely known books written by Twelver hadith scholar Ebn Tawus (Arabic: ابن طاووس, Ebn Ṭāwūs) on the life and martyrdom of Imam Hussain. The book is one of the most renowned Maqtal among Shias.[1] Being intended for pilgrims, the book has an abridged style and for this reason Narrators of hadith are omitted from the work and only the last Narrator is cited.

Compilation

In order to concisely narrating the Ashura incident, the author collects narrations so that they form a whole and omits repetitive and scattered narrations so the reader could obtain more information about the historical event and not the mere narrations.

Contents

The book has the following sections:

  • Preface : including subjects regarding the grandeur of Ashura incident, majesty of Imam Hussain and moral value of mourning and weeping over him.
  • Part 1 : about the events prior to Ashura incident that takes place from the birth of Imam Hussain to the day of the incident.
  • Part 2 : including the events that takes place from morning of Ashura to the martyrdom moment.
  • Part 3 : the events that takes place after the martyrdom ;It begins from transferring the martyrs' heads to Kufa and captivity of Ahl al-Bayt to their return to Medina.[2]

Characteristics

Although the book has not been written with a scientific method, for instance omitting the narrators, the author rejected any exaggerating subject that could be found in similar works. The book also has some unique topics that cannot be found in previous writings such as Imam Hussain's letter to Bani Hashim.
