Engineering:Hai Shih class

The Hai shih on the surface

The Hai shih class submarines are attack subs of Taiwan. They are both former American subs. Hai Shih is the former USS Cutlass and Hai Po was the USS Tusk.

History

On 4 December 1973, Cutlass had her torpedo tubes sealed and was sold to Taiwan, where she was commissioned in the Republic of China Navy as ROCS Hai Shih (SS-791), (meaning "sea lion"). In January 2017, Taiwan announced that it would receive a retrofit to extend its service life until 2026, making it the longest-serving submarine in history. The submarine is still operational and reportedly capable of combat. The $19 million retrofit will be to improve the hull and the diesel vessel's navigational elements. Ex-Tusk was commissioned into the Republic of China Navy as Hai Pao (meaning "seal"), first with hull number SS-92, then SS-794, and finally SS-792.The terms of the purchase specified that she be used strictly for ASW training, so her torpedo tubes were welded shut before the transfer. The Taiwanese restored the torpedo tubes in 1976 and reportedly received modern torpedoes through Italy from a number of sources. As of April 2015, Hai Pao was still afloat at Kaohsiung Naval Base, although probably limited to shallow dives.
