Earth:Artificial Coral Reef Park in Duqm

The Artificial Coral Reefs Park is a project launched by the Special Economic Zone at Duqm (SEZAD). It is located in Duqm in Al Wusta Governorate in the Sultanate of Oman.

Aims of the project

The project aims to creating an attractive habitat for fish and providing an unparalleled diving experience for tourists, residents and residents in Duqm.[1] It is expected to attract new marine life, sustain the marine environment in the region and create habitats for marine creatures.[2] Further, it will bring a unique diving experience for divers and diving enthusiasts as the location is an extension of the rocks scattered around Hamar Rock.[1]

Another aim of the project is to boost fishing industry in Oman.[3] This projects will help in ensuring the availability of fish stocks throughout the year.[3][4]

Role of The Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Water Resources

The Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Water Resources has implemented large artificial coral reef projects in 14 wilayats of the Sultanate of Oman.[2] A total of 13,906 artificial reefs were grown at these sites from 2003 to 2019. The ministry seeks to develop the tourism sector by creating environment ideal for diving and related tourist activities and to carry out scientific studies.[2]

Deployment of artificial concrete blocks

A 250-metre-long pipe with artificial concrete blocks every other 10 metres near Hamar Rock in the sea of Duqm has been deployed. Another similar pipe were deployed days after the first one.[5]
