Erythemis is a genus of dragonflies in the Libellulidae family, commonly known as pondhawks. These medium- to large-sized skimmers are voracious predators of other insects up to their own size, including other dragonflies.[1]
The genus contains the following species:[2]
- Erythemis attala (Selys in Sagra, 1857) – black pondhawk[3]
- Erythemis carmelita Williamson, 1923
- Erythemis collocata (Hagen, 1861) – western pondhawk[3]
- Erythemis credula (Hagen, 1861)
- Erythemis haematogastra (Burmeister, 1839) – red pondhawk[4]
- Erythemis mithroides (Brauer, 1900) – claret pondhawk[3]
- Erythemis peruviana (Rambur, 1842) – flame-tailed pondhawk[3]
- Erythemis plebeja (Burmeister, 1839) – pin-tailed pondhawk[3]
- Erythemis simplicicollis (Say, 1840) – eastern pondhawk[3]
- Erythemis vesiculosa (Fabricius, 1775) – great pondhawk[3]
